The 2016 Syrah is a blend of the Alban and 174 clones from Spanish Springs Vineyard. Following the substantial rain received on the Central Coast during the El Niño winter, the growing season was characterized by being long and cool followed by a series of heat waves in September that helped to fully ripen the Syrah at this coastal site. The grapes were hand harvested on the morning of September 29th then thoroughly sorted and partially destemmed with 40% of the whole clusters included in the fermenter. Fermentation began slowly without the addition of sulfites or cultured yeasts and after two weeks the wine was gently basket pressed to neutral French oak barrels for ageing. Following 18-months in barrel, the wine was racked to tank prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Robust berry and red plum aromas are complimented by savory pepper, herbal, and floral notes. The palate is elegant with soft, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Enjoy!

From a site in San Luis Obispo, the 2016 Syrah Spanish Springs Vineyard, is striking. Savory and floral aromatics meld into a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit in a wine that pulses with energy. The 2016 is delicate and highly nuanced, and yet also delivers tons of fruit intensity, all with remarkable harmony. More than anything else, Tyler Eck’s 2016 Syrah is a wine of personality and breed. I can’t wait to see where Dunites goes in the coming years.

All Syrah brought up in neutral oak, the 2016 is cut from the same cloth, with classic dark fruits, pepper, game, and olive notes, but it has more texture, with a sexy, flamboyant style on the palate. Fresh, balanced, and pure, it’s a smoking value!
